Our Guiding Principles
We champion academic freedom and open intellectual exchange. We promote folkbildning, the Nordic tradition of lifelong learning and personal development. We are a voluntary organisation supporting students and researchers.
Research-Initiating Role
Since its inception in 1950, the organization has played a crucial research-initiating role in the Nordic countries. Such an impact on the Nordic research environment has been possible because NSU’s study circles have offered a unique interdisciplinary meeting place to discuss themes that have not yet been established as recognized fields of research.
Interdisciplinary Nordic-Baltic Collaboration
We foster collaboration among Nordic universities and research institutions. Participate in joint research projects and exchange programs. Attend conferences and workshops that bring together leading scholars from the region. Contribute to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in the Nordic region. Strengthen ties between artistic and academic communities and promote cross-border collaboration.
Supporting Young People
We provide grants and scholarships to support young people in their research and travel. Benefits include presenting their own artistic and/or academic work and receive valuable feedback from experienced scholars, engaging with passionate thinkers of today and hosting one’s own study circle. Scholarships are available to those involved in learning the logistics of organising an event for 200+ people during the summer, or hosting the Children Circle. We invest in the next generation of academic leaders.
Empowering Through Education
Nordic Summer University invites everyone to participate in interdisciplinary study circles and explore diverse topics from philosophy and literature to social sciences and environmental studies. Engage with scholars and students from various backgrounds, fostering collaboration and innovative perspectives. Join us in pushing the boundaries of intellectual inquiry.
Creating Civil Resilience Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Nordic Summer University strengthens civil society’s resilience against the influence of (dis)information through a well-established collaboration between cultural actors, voluntary organizations and science.
Folkbildning Initiatives
Nordic Summer University engages in folkbildning initiaties that promote lifelong learning and personal development. Study circles are led by volunteers who organise workshops, seminars, around an interdisciplinary theme, designed to broaden your horizons. Study Circles
The study circles are the basis for the research development work, and each three-year circle is elected through democratic decisions in the general assembly consisting of the participants themselves.
